What is the Rendering?

Rendering is a sustainable process that repurposes co-products from the meat industry, which would otherwise go to waste, into various valuable products. It involves reclaiming materials such as fats, bones, and proteins from animal leftovers and transforming them into ingredients for products like pet food, biofuels, and industrial materials.

Main Destination Industries

The rendering industry plays a crucial role in supporting various sectors, including animal nutrition, pet food, aquaculture, and biosecurity. By repurposing meat, fat, and other processing remnants, renderers provide valuable resources for these industries, contributing to their sustainability and economic viability.

Animal Feed

Rendered animal protein meals are recognized for their nutritional value, serving as excellent sources of calcium, phosphorus, protein, and essential amino acids.Animal fats, when added to feed rations, provide energy and improve palatability. North American renderers adhere to strict quality control measures, ensuring that their products are consistently high quality, uniform, stable, and affordable. These materials contribute to sustainable sourcing for pet food and animal feed, supporting overall nutrition and well-being.

Standards for Animal Feed Safety:

Rendering plants comply with FDA regulations under the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) and maintain quality and safety control systems. The FSMA ensures rigorous quality requirements to guarantee pet food safety, with preventive controls, monitoring, and collaboration with local and state bodies. Under the FSMA, all food production facilities must provide a written plan for how they will implement safe preparation protocols. This documentation must include:

  • • An evaluation of food safety hazards.
  • • An outline of preventive controls to protect against hazards.
  • • A description of monitoring to ensure controls are working correctly.
  • • An ongoing record of monitoring activities.
  • • A plan for correcting any safety issues that could arise.

Rendering Industry Code of Practice:

Research demonstrates that rendered pet food is an excellent source of the key nutrients and energy pets need for healthy diets. Rendered pet food uses proteins, fats, bone meal, and other co-products of meat processing in full compliance with industry standards to deliver key nutrients for pets. These include:

  • • Proteins: Proteins from animal co-products can supply critical amino acids to support pets' health.
  • • Minerals: The nutrients sourced from rendered products offer a wide range of minerals that meet pets' day-to-day dietary needs.
  • • Vitamins: Fats and other materials repurposed from meat processing can supply several vital vitamins to keep pets healthy..
  • • Carbohydrates: The carbohydrates in rendered animal food can help provide the energy pets need every day to thrive.
